Poetry 101

I'm not renown for my ability to write poetry.

It seems having lived in a country that's famous for having produced quite a few famous writers (W.B. Yeats and Oscar Wilde ring any bells) for the last seven years hasn't exactly rubbed off on me.

In fact, if I was to make a living writing poetry, I'd have long since starved to death. There are only two little poems on this blog, you can check them out here and here (scroll to the bottom of the blog posts).

Mind you, if I was to make living writing fiction I'd also be six feet under.

The main reason for this would be that I haven't taken the time to write. Lately I've just been focusing on my blogging.

Shame on me really. Back in the day, I was always writing something or other. I haven't written anything in years though. I miss it a little, but not much. I've not felt any inspiration to pick up where I left off with my fiction writing but as they say you can take the girl away from her writing but you can't take the writer out of the girl.

One day I'll go back to my fiction writing days. Until then, I'm having just as much fun blogging.

I've kind of gone off topic here. I hadn't planned to reminisce about my fiction writing days.

Back to me and poetry.

I vaguely remember I used to write a lot of poetry as a teenager. None of that poetry still exists though. I got rid of it all and it's for the best, trust me. Whenever that weird teenager I once was used to write poetry, it would turn into a song, three pages long with no rhyme or reason. Also, back then my English was hideous, truly truly hideous. If I was to look at these feeble attempts at ruining the English language, I'd probably break out in hives. I'd also set them on fire. It's for the world's greater good that these "works of art" are all but a memory.

Nevertheless, I occasionally suffer from minor relapses and try my hand at poetry. It's not voluntarily, that I do so. Trust me. I'd resist the temptation if I could but that's like asking me to never eat another dumpling. It's simply not going to happen.

Anyway, I dabbled in poetry tonight. It's nothing serious and I whipped it up in about 20 minutes. I got struck by a sudden urge to find words that rhyme with "fish" and here's my latest *cough*masterpiece*cough*, a homage to my fish, the sweetest, most loving and kind creature on the world.

Please do take this with a huge pinch of salt, it's just a bit of nonsense.

Dearest fish,

Do you know?
I think you're quite a dish.
A little bit boyish,
And sometimes so foolish,
With only a little English.
How much I love you, is simply freakish.
About food you're hoggish,
But in bed never girlish.
This silly poem I'll publish,
I just won't be sheepish.
You're so sweetish,
Often very thievish,
And every day so utterly stylish.
You I’ll definitely ravish!
